The ‘diamond rush’ that never was: South African government says diamonds discovered in village are quartz

After a cattle-herder in a the KwaZulu-Natal province claimed to have discovered diamonds, thousands flooded the area in hopes of striking rich themselves. Unfortunately for them, they won’t be making much money as tests have confirmed that the gems found are just quartz, the most common mineral in the Earth’s crust.
